How to Dispose of or Recycle Broken Glass In UK

How to Dispose of Broken Glass

Broken glass is not only awful to clean up but also hazardous for the workers who collect your trash from bins if not disposed of properly. You cannot dispose of broken glass like other trash, especially if you live in the UK. Don’t forget to protect yourself and the workers out there. Make sure you follow the following guidelines to dispose of broken glass pieces.

Items you require:

  1. Newspaper
  2. Cloth
  3. Bin-bag
  4. Vacuum cleaner
  5. Multipurpose cleaner
  6. Damp paper towel
  7. Thick Rubber gloves
  8. Tape
  9. Shoes

Wear your safety gear

  • Broken and stray glass shards are dangerous to deal with. Before you do anything to dispose of broken glass, make sure you have worn thick sole shoes and rubber gloves.
  • Keep the children and your pet off the scene where glass is broken.

Pick up the large pieces:

  • Make a nice thick sheet of newspaper. If there are holes, make sure to cover them with layers.
  • Pick up the large pieces of glass with your fully gloved hands.
  • Tape the large pieces and place them on the newspaper.
  • Check the whole room and a couple of following rooms to ensure that glass pieces are not tossed over there.

Vacuum the Room

  • Make sure the surface is not wet. If water is spilt along with the broken glass, wipe the surface with a paper towel first.
  • After you finish wiping the surface, vacuum the entire room. A vacuum cleaner is much handy than a regular broom. It can pick even the slightest powder of broken glass.

Disposal

  • Once you have vacuumed the room, open the vacuum bin and dump the residue on the newspaper where you put the other broken pieces.
  • Now wrap the pileup and place the newspaper and other materials you used for cleaning in a plastic bin bag.
  • Dispose of this bag in your general dustbin.

Caution: Please do not use a carrier bag as it may contain holes, broken glass pieces can rip the bags, or the residue can fall all over the floor.
